Week 3 Reflection, Rise of Industrialism

First I will be talking about The Gospel of Wealth by Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie states in his entry that there can be no wealth without the poor. That there has to be social classes and that before you could hardly separate the rich from the poor. Now Carnegie is saying that the constructs of income are beneficial to society, but I'm struggling to find out how. How is it beneficial to have poor people in the world, or in our nation. Doesn’t that only hurt the economic status of your nation and effect everyone in it? Wouldn’t you want the wealth of your nation and the people in it to be similar, and no have wage gaps as we do today? Carnegie continues to say that only good can come from wealth an no evil can come from the accumulation of wealth. Only for the people who have the ability and energy for it. As we know that is quite the joke because the wealthiest people in today’s world are greedy and do not care for the poor. Maybe Carnegie’s intentions were pure and maybe his true i...

Week 2 Reflection, Reconstruction and Jim Crow

Image
With the end of the civil war in 1865 and the freeing of the slaves was a revolutionary time in American history. For the first time in hundreds of years people were finally free, or at least “free”. We could get into the segregation piece tonight, but I will save that for a couple weeks from now. The first article with the overview of reconstruction talks about the 15 th  amendment giving black men the right to vote in 1870. This is a big step in the democracy for America because no longer are black men treated as 3/5 of a person, but their word actually means something now in terms of voting for presidents. The overview also talked about the plans to expand women’s rights, provide debt relief, and start state funded school, which is all a big step in the right direction to move forward as a nation.  In 1864 the Wade-Davis Bill came into play with the plan being that each state eliminates slavery, and that, the majority of that state has the right to vote as long as that p...

Introduction to why I chose JCSU

Image
Hello class, name is Matthew Fix and I am a sixth year here at Johnson C. Smith University. I am 23 and potentially in my last year of schooling unless I decide to go to graduate school and obtain my Masters' degree. So, let me tell you a little bit about my background and why I chose to come to JCSU. I am originally from Wisconsin, born and raised. I finished high school in 2014 and then went on to receive a D1 track scholarship from Valparaiso University in Indiana. I left the university a couple weeks into the semester and came home to work and then go back to school in spring of 2015. In the spring of 2015, I started classed at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I stayed there until spring 2016. While at UWM I ran on the club track team which primarily ran at D3 meets through Wisconsin and Illinois. I was undefeated during the outdoor season and gained attention from the coaches. After a misunderstanding with the coaches I decided not to run track for them, but instead pla...
