Week 14 Reflection, The VietCong

Image
Vietnam was the one war in American history that received more backlash than any other. The American public hated the idea of going to war with Vietnam and it showed all over the country. People began disrespecting the soldiers coming home after risking and some sacrificing their lives all in the name of the American people. Nam was to me a failure on the part of the USA trying to intervein in the countries business and protect South Vietnam, which left 60,000 people dead on the side of America. A lot of people didn’t think it was necessary and while other wars suffered way more casualties, it was the principle of the war with this one.              President Nixon was one reason that the war in Nam was so heavily criticized because he violated the Cambodian neutrality act and that sparked protest all over the country. He also had the Watergate scandal which led to his impeachment. Nixon spent most of his term trying to...

Week 13 Reflection, Civil Rights

Image
Today I am going to be talking about the 1960’s and the introduction to the civil rights movements. Obviously as we know, the black community has been treated horribly since the beginning of time by the USA. This was a time for the black community to stand up and change the ways the public views them. This was also a time for change in America for the white community. It was time to get off their high horse and start treating people equal and stop thinking you’re better. This is still something that America needs to work on today, but the 60’s is where it all started.  Brown Vs Board of Education really was a way to make waves in the white community and get a better start for black youth. This allowed black children to start to be integrated into white schools so they had better resources to learn and advance. “Their children had only half the chance of completing high school, only a third the chance of completing college, and a third the chance of entering a profession when the...

Week 12 Reflection, The 1950's

Image
https://www.fugro.com/your-industry/building-and-infrastructure-development/roads-and-highways   I am going to be first talking about the Sunbelt. After World War 2 it was imperative that the whole country start and continue to progress and regroup after the war. One of the ways we did that was by building up the rest of our country. The Northeast and the Midwest were booming because of the industrial revolution, the Northeast was the original starting point of America, and the South/Western part of the USA was fairly simple. There wasn’t a lot of action out there in terms of business for the US and where the government had holdings. We now see how big the west is and how economically, it has grew to be what we know it today. The south was poor then and in my opinion is still poor now. There are a couple of big cities that hold importance, but mainly they are tourist cities.      ...

Week 10 Reflection, The Great Depression

Image
With the success the country had during the 20’s of course we and to have a downfall, right? We couldn’t continue to possibly keep growing economically right? Well we didn’t, we eventually had that downfall, and that was the great depression in the 1930’s. In 1929 the stock market crashed hard and sent this country into a deep dive of turmoil. The New York Stock exchange experienced a lot of loss on trade after a huge wave of sell orders came their way. The average price of a share fell 12% and that is a big loss of any kind, no matter how much money you have. Over 16 million shares were sold because of the decline and the market and country suffered. You could see that all throughout the country.              In 1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president and she began to try to change the tide in the country. Granted this was going to be a hard task, and things were going to get a lot worse before they got better...

Week 8 Reflection, Racial Tensions

Image
This week we are going to be talking about the 1920’s. One issue during the 1920’s was race, however that has always been an issue in our country. During the first world war more black soldiers had lost their lives than white soldiers, and the African American race was not happy about that. They wanted to be repaid for their sacrifices and when they returned home nothing happened but the country turning their back more on the entire race.   The National Urban League, organized in 1911 by social workers, white philanthropists, and black leaders, concentrated on finding jobs for urban African Americans. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was created for the betterment of the African American race. The NAACP also fought school segregation in northern cities during the 1920s and lobbied hard, though unsuccessfully, for a federal anti-lynching bill. Marcus Garvey was a successful black leader during the 20’s fighting for equality and justic...

Week 7 Reflection, Womans' suffrage

Image
After WW1, this was a time in American history for our country to really take off and flourish. A time to set ourselves above the rest of the world and become that dominant power that we have been looking to become years before that. With the ban of alcohol heading into the 1920’2 and the oppression of women, this was a trying time in our history. As far back as the Civil war, women have been trying to get some of the same rights and privileges as the men in our country. There was of course a huge split between who supported it and who didn’t. The 15 th  amendment included the right to black men to be able to vote and white women felt that they should be included in that. I think that both white and black women should’ve been included in that for equality sake. Liquor manufactures and saloon owners did not want women to have equal voting rights because there was a fear that they would vote in favor to ban the sales of alcohol. They also feared women would vote to ban child labor a...

Week 6 Reflection, World War 1

Image
Before the turn of the 20 th  century the USA rose to become a world power. The US had the more productive economy, had a lot of goods and services within the country, but also available for export. However, we didn’t have a great military at the time and that hurt us, as we were about 4-5 times smaller than the other countries that were in WW1. The reason that the US had such a small military is that we weren’t interested in expansion, but rather making our current territory the best it could be. We weren’t interested with war, or any of that, however, that was all about to change very soon.  World War 1 started in 1914 and the USA didn’t enter the war till 1917 and then it ended shortly after in 1918. WW1 was more deadly than any other previous war in history and was the first war to use planes, submarines, and poison gas among other things. The war pit Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungry, against the powers of France, Russia, and Britain with the US joining later to reall...
